Brian has been intrigued with the thought of Italian villages offering homes for sale for $1. These villages or regions have seen their populations dwindling and were looking for ways to reinvigorate their towns. So, they began offering run down houses for auctions starting at a $1. Depending on the town, which were all over Italy, some in Sicily, others in the northern part of the country, they required you to fix up the property to a certain standard, within 2-3 years. As mentioned, each city has it owns requirements, some prefer a younger couple with kids, others just want the homes fixed up, to present a better town, and hopefully attract more tourists.
Other countries doing something similar was a village in Switzerland, Spain had an entire village or two for sale. Once again, these towns are being abandoned and are looking for a resurgence. Tune in to the podcast or show notes to get more details.
The Friends also discussed top places around the world to retire. In our show notes we list the top 10. We went in a little more detail on Costa Rica, Panama and Portugal. The common thread with these three countries and others in the top 10 is that they are open to foreigners, they give equal property rights when you buy property there and they have fair taxation policies which do not double tax you. They also have solid ex-pat communities which makes it easier to acclimate to these places.
